The short version
DesiFam only works if people can trust what they find here — a listing that’s really for sale, a community that’s really what it says, a person who is who they claim to be. Treat every neighbor, buyer, seller, host, guest and match the way you’d want a member of your own family treated.
Be honest
- Describe items, rentals, jobs and services accurately — condition, price, availability, location.
- Use real photos of the actual item or place, not stock images or someone else’s listing.
- AI images and flyers you make on DesiFam follow the same rules as any image you post, and mustn’t claim to be from another person or business.
- Only create a matrimony, tutor, pandit, professional-services or Handymen profile for yourself or someone who’s asked you to post on their behalf.
- Don’t impersonate another person, business, or DesiFam staff.
Be respectful
- No harassment, hate speech, threats, or attacks on someone for who they are.
- Disagree with a post or a review without attacking the person who wrote it.
- Keep community and matrimony spaces welcoming — this is a place people bring their families.
- Birthday wishes follow the same rules as posts. Keep them kind and personal: no links, advertising or requests for money. The birthday member can remove wishes from their board, and community moderators can remove or hold any wish.
Keep it safe
Meet in public places for item exchanges, verify a rental in person before paying anything, and never wire money or share a one-time code with someone you met on DesiFam. Our full Safety Guide walks through this in detail for buying, renting, jobs and more.
Classes with children
Teachers keep all contact about a child with the parent or guardian — never message a child directly. Never ask for a child’s photo, date of birth, school or contact details. Never name or describe a child in a message to the class. Parents and guardians are welcome to sit in on any class. If anything worries you, use Report on the class’s listing or contact us.
No spam or scams
- No repeated or off-topic posting, and no using DesiFam purely to collect people’s contact details.
- No requests to pay by wire transfer, gift card, or any method designed to be unrecoverable.
- No listings for items, services or job offers you don’t genuinely have or intend to honor.
Immigration comments
Immigration comments are members talking, not legal advice. Don’t post links, email addresses, phone numbers, receipt numbers, offers to sell or arrange visas or documents, or requests to move the conversation elsewhere; comments that break these rules are refused when you post. If three different members report a comment it is hidden at once and your commenting is paused until a moderator decides: they may restore it, keep it hidden, or remove it and keep the pause (for a set time or until lifted), and they can lock an account for repeated or serious abuse.
News and opinions
Anyone can share a link to a news story. Verified members can also publish an article or an opinion under their own name. Write in your own words: don’t copy someone else’s article — share a link to it instead. Post your own view as an Opinion rather than presenting it as news, and don’t state claims about a real person or business as fact unless you can back them up. Articles and opinions go through the same automatic review as other posts; ones that break these guidelines are held or removed, and any member can report them.
Mentions and posting under your handle
Mention a member only when you want them to join the conversation, never to spam or harass, and never to move a chat to another app. Posting under your handle hides your name from other members, not from moderators: the same rules apply, and handle posts can be removed and their authors restricted.
A handle is a pseudonym: nobody can find or identify you by it unless you tell them. Posting under your handle hides your name from other members, not from moderators. A community’s moderators can see who is behind a handle in their community. Members can block an author directly from any item posted under a handle.
Reporting and moderation
Listings — the marketplace, rentals, jobs, directories and events — are screened automatically before they go live, using a banned-terms filter and an AI-assisted review. Most are screened in seconds; a listing held for a closer look shows as pending until it clears.
Posts, replies, group posts and forum threads in communities are checked against automatic rules instead. A post that trips one is held for the community’s moderators, and only you see it, marked “Your message is pending community approval to maintain a safe, spam-free environment.” A post is held when:
- it adds a photo or a link from an account less than 48 hours old, in a public community (a verified badge lifts this straight away);
- it has a link, in a community whose admin has turned links off;
- it has a phone number, messaging-app contact or email address, in a public community — unless you have a verified badge or are an established member there;
- it adds a photo where the community only lets approved or verified members add photos;
- it matches DesiFam’s banned words, or words the community’s moderators have banned;
- it comes too quickly — more than 3 posts a minute, or more than 3 new forum threads an hour. If several of your posts are held within an hour, posting pauses for a while; replies and direct messages have limits of their own.
A community’s admin and moderators review what’s held there: they publish it, decline it with a reason you’ll see, or remove it. In DesiFam’s own city communities, DesiFam’s moderators and the local moderators they appoint do this. A held post nobody reviews within 14 days is declined, and you can post it again.
Every post, reply and forum post has a Report link. Pick a reason — spam, harassment, hate speech, misinformation, adult content, off-topic, scam, or something else you describe — and add a note if you like. Listings, profiles, reviews and direct messages from friends can be reported too, each with reasons suited to them. Reports about a community’s content go to its moderators; reports about direct messages and personal timeline posts go to DesiFam’s team. Reporting never notifies the person you reported, and a community’s moderators never see who reported — only DesiFam’s staff do.
When three different members report the same post or reply, it’s hidden straight away until a moderator looks at it (reports from brand-new accounts, or from members who joined after it was posted, don’t count toward the three). When two or more members report something for harassment or hate, an AI review is added for the moderators; it can hide the post until they look, but it never deletes anything.
What happens after a report
A moderator can keep the content (the reports are closed and it stays up), decline or remove it, or go further for repeated or serious problems:
- Mute — for 24 hours or 7 days in that community. You can still read and like posts, but not post or reply there.
- Ban — removes you from the community, and can remove your posts there from the last 7 days.
- Restrict posting — DesiFam’s moderators can stop you posting anywhere on DesiFam for 24 hours, 7 days or until they lift it, and can lock an account for severe or repeated violations.
When there’s a pattern of concerns about one member, a community’s admin or DesiFam’s staff can ask for an AI review of that member’s community posts from the last 90 days. During an investigation, DesiFam’s site admins can include the direct messages that member sent. Only the person who asked and DesiFam’s admins see the result, and it’s deleted 90 days later. Every report is reviewed, and anything that puts someone at risk is prioritized.
